Century
The Platinum Century, also known as Platinum #3776 Century, is, without a doubt, the most popular line of fountain pens from this Japanese company and the basis on which a good number of special or limited edition models have been built. that have been produced over the years to praise certain particularities of Japanese culture and geography or to commemorate different events of great relevance to the brand.
The emergence of this series on the market took place in 1978 under the name #3776, a figure that refers to the height in meters of the highest, most revered and most visited mountain in Japan: Mount Fuji. Years later, with the idea of celebrating the centenary of the founding of Platinum, small changes would be introduced in its design and its name would be changed by adding the term “Century”, a name that it has maintained to this day.
The design of the #3776 Century collection is due to the mind of master Haruo Uneda, better known in the world of handwriting as “Mr. Fountain Pen”, who, in his obsessive desire to create the perfect stylograph, would come up with this beautiful model defined by its characteristic cigar or torpedo-shaped profile. Its rounded ends, the purity of its lines and its exquisite elegance are some of the keys to a design that has endured over time and has established itself in the market with a very important sales success, currently being one of the most popular fountain pens sold in the world.
Preserving its characteristic image intact, but playing with the materials and with some of its ornamental details, with the passage of time, some subseries have emerged within the #3776 Century collection that go beyond the basic model and enrich its proposal with the use of celluloid instead of the original ABS resin, as in the #3776 Century Celluloid line, with the use of wood from different tree species in the manufacture of their bodies and caps or with the addition of a spectacular maki-e decoration throughout its surface, in the case of the Urushi Maki-e and Kanazawa Maki-e series. An immense range of possibilities that explain, to a large extent, the fabulous reception and fame garnered by this emblematic model.
