Montegrappa Extra 1930 Black & White
Probably no model better represents the essence of Montegrappa's Purist line than the Extra 1930 fountain pen, a beautiful writing pen inspired by old specimens from the 1930s preserved in the museum of the prestigious Italian firm and which, despite its short existence, it has already become a modern classic for the brand.
Its refined aesthetics, with elegant lines and clearly indebted to the past, are extraordinarily enhanced by a careful selection of materials that, like the other models in the Purist line, recover high-quality raw materials practically abandoned at present by the manufacturers of fountain pens in favor of other substances in order to achieve lower production costs.
This is the case of the celluloid with which the barrel and cap of this wonderful piece are made, a compound derived from cellulose widely used in other times in the production of fountain pens and which, unfortunately, has currently been replaced in most of the time by plastics of very inferior quality.
Among its superb qualities stands out the fact that, although its essence and spectacular color are common to all the pieces, the pattern of each fountain pen made with this material, its captivating veining, is different from the previous one, which gives it an additional plus by turning each writing pen into an authentic work of art, unique and unrepeatable, a completely exclusive object that will delight its lucky owners.
The Extra 1930 model comes in three different colors: black bamboo, turtle brown and, in the case at hand, black and white, a fascinating combination of both colors in which, on a sober black background, snowy white veins are arranged, animating its surface with an elegant chromatic contrast.
The aforementioned nobility of the materials used in its manufacture also constitute a magnificent example of its ornamental details, made of 925 sterling silver and distributed throughout various points of the piece, such as its cap, which is crowned with a beautiful jewel decorated with an emblem in relief that includes the founding date of the Montegrappa company —1912— framed in the upper part by a delicate fretwork and in the lower part by a laurel wreath. This also houses its stylized clip, equipped with a practical wheel that rotates to facilitate smooth insertion into the pockets of our clothing, and, finally, its most striking element, which is none other than the large band that constitutes its lower finish, surrounded by an imposing fretwork on which the name of the Italian brand appears engraved.
Also made of sterling silver are the ring located in the bib area, which breaks the monotony by introducing an interesting tonal contrast with the predominant color of the celluloid, and its majestic grip section, which houses the thread that makes up its secure locking system.
This exceptional fountain pen features an integrated piston charging system and a magnificent ebonite feeder, which provides a constant and generous flow of ink to its extraordinary two-tone 18-carat solid gold nib with platinum mask, a beautiful element that features also with a beautiful engraved decoration in which the fretwork motif and the commemorative logo of its foundation are repeated again present on the band and the jewel of the cap along with the name of the company, its place of origin —Italy— and the point of the nib, which to satisfy the varied tastes of users, is made available to the public in a very wide range of thicknesses that include Extra Fine (EF), Fine (F), Medium (M), Thick (B), Extra Thick ( BB), Middle Oblique (OM), Thick Oblique (OB) and Stub.
A work of such magnitude deserves a presentation at its level, and that is why those responsible for the firm have opted in this case for a splendid octagonal case in a delicate blue color, the IKSDASI2, on which the eight-sided emblem of the brand. A final example of the care and affection put by Montegrappa in the manufacture of this emblematic gem of writing.
